Biotechnology/Biofuels Algae Cultivation InternshipAt — Verpond, Inc.
The chosen intern will work with a Verpond expert to build and operate scale-down experimental setups of a large scale open aquatic algae cultivation system (OAACS). The laboratory systems will test the effectiveness of new and innovative semipermeable membranes to enable large-scale carbon dioxide uptake from the ocean during growth of algae for biofuels. The student will implement practical experimental methods for the development of meaningful biotechnological processes.
The student will learn a combination of skills that will help them in many scientific or engineering fields. These include the design of effective experiments to address a scientific or engineering need, the assembly of satisfactory equipment to generate and analyze samples, the proper execution of experiments, the analysis of data, and the interpretation of data and design of follow-up experiments to meet stated goals.
The intern will receive safety training to make sure they properly use personal safety equipment and safely handle hazardous materials. Interns will be trained on good laboratory notebook procedures and will work with a biotechnology professional to execute experiments.
The work for this internship will involve growth of non-hazardous algae strains to establish proof of concept for new cultivation methods. The intern will be using chemicals that are hazardous if ingested in their concentrated forms but are harmless at working concentrations. The intern will also be working with acids and bases for titrations of solutions during their preparation.
Submission of a resume and letters of recommendation and an interview will be part of the application process
