Environmental Steward At — Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Discovery Center

Opportunity Summary 

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation is an environmental non-profit that's mission is to support the Agua Hedionda Lagoon through education and outreach. Service-learning students can help with either gardening/landscaping in our native plant garden, events (Haunted Corn Maze), administrative work, trail maintenance/restoration projects, assisting our teachers in our education programs or help our Discovery Center staff with our daily tasks. 

Opportunity Activities may include:

  • Assist a professional
  • Participate as a Teacher's Aid in our Education Programs
  • Create curriculum, lesson plans, and/or activities (including physical or hands-on activities)
  • Create or promote marketing content
  • Create written or digital content (e.g. graphic design, photos, website, blog/article, social media posts)
  • Participate in a painting, building, renovation or construction activity (such as, neighborhood/housing restoration or building theater props or playgrounds, etc)
  • Participate in an environmental restoration, planting/gardening and/or recycling activity
  • Create Erosion Control Barriers for out Public Access Trails 
  • Litter/Refuse Clean-up
  • Animal Care/Feeding/Cleaning Animal Enclosures
  • Provide general office administration (e.g. filing, data entry, processing forms, intra-office communication, laminating)
  • meeting preparation, returning phone calls)
  • Provide translation and/or transcription services
  • Event Support (building sets, decor, lamination, food prep, moving tables/chairs) 
  • General Upkeep of Building (window cleaning, spiderweb removal, vegetation overgrowth) 
  • Writing thank you letters to donors
Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

After completing a service-learning opportunity at AHLF, students will have learned what it's like to work at and wear multiple hats of a growing environmental non-profit and participate in many different departments and conversations that are all rooted in the same goal of supporting our local watershed.

Opportunity Training 

Depending on the type of work students are interested in exploring within the environmental non-profit will decide what type of training and education is required.
