CSUS - Recreation, Parks & Tourism Administration

Organization Description

The RPTA Department offers a multitude of programs which provide students with the skills to manage people, programs, and events in a variety of recreational settings. Students are provided with broad-based curricula that include both theoretical in-class coursework and practical field experience.

Program Information

All recreation majors, and many of our graduate students, complete professional internships, consistent with the accreditation standards for our undergraduate programs. Students should work with Faculty advisor to find an internship placement.

Internships are complicated and need to meet various standards for programmatic reasons and to satisfy campus and CSU rules that help establish liability coverage for both students and agencies. For this reason there are many forms and agreements to read and prepare, as well as routine mandatory meetings where these elements are explained.

In addition to individual program requirements outlined below, all interns:

  • Must work under an agency employee who is at the supervisor/management level.
  • May be paid or unpaid, depending upon agency resources.
  • Are required to complete a project approved by the agency supervisor in consultation with the faculty advisor.
