Save Our Shores
Mission: To foster a thriving Monterey Bay for all.
Vision: A resilient coastline uplifted by the responsible action of engaged community members.
At Save Our Shores, we protect and preserve the health of Monterey Bay and the Central Coast through education, advocacy, and outreach. These three pillars strengthen one another, creating lasting change for our ocean and our communities.
KNOWN HAZARDS:
As part of Save Our Shores programs, service learners will be facilitating public beach and river cleanup events with community member volunteers. As the cleanup leader they will be required to safely and properly dispose of any hazardous items found. During a cleanup event they may come into contact with hazardous materials including but not limited to: syringes, sharp objects, construction materials, used personal hygiene and personal protective equipment, fishing gear, abandoned encampments, and deceased animals.
SITE LOCATION:
While we have an office location as our main site, our programs and events take place outside and with the general public. Service learners will be leading and supporting events at locations such as beaches, rivers, parks, and other community spaces where Save Our Shores does not have control over the conditions. Travel to/from these locations will be required and is not provided by Save Our Shores.
SUPERVISION:
Service learners who complete our Sanctuary Steward training are able to independently represent Save Our Shores in the community and facilitate events and programs coordinated by Save Our Shores staff. Often the site supervisor will not be present during the event, however other trained Sanctuary Stewards will often be present and they will be supporting each other during programs and events.
