Opportunity Summary 

Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) is looking for a part-time service learner to assist with their Regions Rise Together Initiative. The focus of this role is to help strengthen local communities and economies in the Monterey Bay region by collaborating with community-based organizations that support workers. The student we’re seeking should be bilingual and will be involved in various activities to support community engagement and data collection, particularly in the Salinas and Pajaro Valley areas.

Key responsibilities of the role may include:

  1. Community Engagement: The student will work closely with community-based organizations, MBEP staff, and labor representatives to facilitate community engagement efforts. This could involve organizing events, workshops, or meetings that bring stakeholders together to discuss economic development and worker-related issues.
  2. Data Collection: The student might assist in gathering relevant data related to local economies, workforce trends, and community needs. This could involve surveys, interviews, or other methods to collect valuable information that will inform MBEP's initiatives.
  3. Storytelling: An important aspect of the role could be crafting compelling narratives based on collected data. Storytelling is a powerful way to communicate the impact of initiatives and engage a broader audience. These stories could be used in reports, presentations, or on digital platforms.
  4. Supporting Nonprofit Organizations: The student may work closely with nonprofit community-based organizations in the Salinas and Pajaro Valley areas. This could involve providing assistance, resources, or guidance to these organizations as they work towards their goals of supporting workers and local communities.
  5. Language Proficiency: Bilingual skills are crucial for effective communication, especially in communities where multiple languages are spoken. The student will need to be proficient in both languages to facilitate smooth interactions and understanding.
  6. Collaboration: Collaboration is key in this role, as the student will work with various stakeholders including MBEP staff, community-based organizations, labor representatives, and potentially other partners.

Requirements:

  • Travel to the business office (Marina) and various locations in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys for community meetings. 
  • Access to reliable transportation

  • Responsiveness to email communication
Opportunity Training 

Service learner will be trained on the methods and skills needed to collect effective data from community, as well as how to collate and communicate results.

MBEP staff and service learners will meet regularly virtually or in person to review project details and progress.  

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

SITE LOCATION: Parking and work areas may not be secure or adequately illuminated.

SUPERVISION: Students may be required to work at night (after 6pm). Or, students may be supervised less than 50% of the time or the supervisor will be overseeing more than 8 people.
