Peer Mentor for the Aspiring Scholars ProgramAt — CSUSM Aspiring Scholars Program

Opportunity Summary 

Become a peer mentor for a student with a disability included on our CSUSM campus! The CSUSM Scholars Program is CSUSM's Inclusive Post Secondary Education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Peer mentors will be given the opportunity to support the program in one or more ways, included but not limited to: helping a student navigate campus, attending class with a student, tutoring a student before or after class with assignments, attending campus events with a student, and/or providing support to the program staff with program development.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Peer Mentors will learn the skills needed to provide support to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They will learn how to best support others to successfully participate in the college experience. They will learn a variety of strategies to implement simple accommodations so that students with an array of ability levels can successfully access our campus, college classes, and CSUSM events/activities.

Opportunity Training 

Peer mentors will be provided with an Introduction to Peer Mentoring training. On-going training as needed will be provided based on the needs of the peer mentor and the student being supported.

Opportunity Application Instructions 

Supplemental questions pertaining to peer mentor's strengths, interests, needs, and experiences may be asked in order to better assign them a role and support them.
