Food Bank Assistant At — Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

Opportunity Summary 

Create food kits that go to more than 28,000 families, children, and older adults each month Inspect, sort, and pack donated food items to be distributed through the Food Bank’s network of 600+ partner agencies Set-up volunteer check-in area prior to volunteer arrival and breakdown after event Welcome & greet 100+ volunteers regularly, collect forms, and distribute work assignments Accurately capture volunteer data and upload volunteer information into volunteer management system Capture pictures of volunteer groups for social media use and promotional materials Dismiss groups of 10-100 volunteers at the end of the event, thanking them for their service and sharing project outcomes Load food boxes weighing 15-30 pounds into vehicles as part of the Food Bank’s home delivery program Distribute food boxes to hundreds of families and individuals during monthly community food distributions Create fliers and social media content to educate others about food insecurity

Increased understanding of the issue of food insecurity in LA County. Knowledgeable about food programs and services available to people experiencing food insecurity and how to access them, as well as insight into the vast network of organizations working together to end hunger. Empathy and compassion: Volunteering at the Food Bank offers opportunities to engage with individuals facing food insecurity and other challenges. Teamwork and collaboration: by serving at the Food Bank, students will learn to collaborate with others, contribute to a common goal, and develop teamwork skills. Communication skills: students will interact with a wide range of individuals, fellow students, staff members, community volunteers, and other constituents. Time management: Serving at the Food Bank often involves handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Problem Solving & Adaptability: Fellows will work in a dynamic environment. Students will learn to think on their feet and adapt to changing situations. Customer Service skills: Fellows will interact with a diverse group of people. They will gain customer service skills, including patience, conflict resolution, and the ability to handle situations with professionalism. Leadership and initiative skills: As students gain experience and confidence, they may be given additional responsibilities and opportunities to develop their leadership skills Public speaking skills: Fellows will be given the opportunity to address volunteer groups and practice speaking in front of an audience.
