BioTrek Docent InternAt — BioTrek, Cal Poly Pomona
Fellows perform a variety of tasks for tours for local primary and secondary schools and other local groups. In particular, fellows will host tour groups at a variety of interactive stations that will educate visitors on the following topics: climate change, conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, ethnobotany (the traditional human uses of plant species), and characteristics of native California and rainforest animals. Fellows will also perform garden maintenance, including trimming, weeding, and installing new plants and displays, as well as maintain BioTrek's Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter feeds.
Interactive teaching techniques that are used by scientific interpreters at museums, zoos, botanical gardens, government agencies, and other organizations. Students will know how to convey information to the general public both verbally and through displays, including signage and online resources. Fellows will also learn about general plant maintenance, including trimming, fertilizing, and watering, and, if they desire, techniques for handling certain animal species.
Students will undergo in-person training at the beginning of the Fall Semester to learn the techniques and content for the stations for the tours. They will also be instructed in the material they should collect and post for BioTrek's social media pages. Training for maintenance of the grounds will be performed at the beginning of the fall term and continued throughout the year depending on the task.
