The role of a school social worker is multifaceted, focusing on supporting students' emotional, social, and academic well-being. School social workers play a vital role in bridging the gap between home, school, and community, ensuring that students have the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Below are some of the day-to-day tasks of a school social work intern. Social Work interns will receive ongoing training, including shadowing opportunities under Social Work supervision on a weekly basis.

1. Supporting Students' Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being

  • Carry a caseload of students that range between a 1-5 out of a 10-point scale.
  • Provide individual counseling and co-facilitate group counseling to address issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-esteem.
  • Help students develop coping strategies, social and problem-solving skills.
  • Identify and address barriers to students' success in and out of school.

2. Advocacy and Empowerment

  • Act as an advocate for students and their families, ensuring their voices are heard.
  • Assist families in accessing community resources such as mental health services, food assistance, or housing support.

3. Promoting Positive School Climate

  • Support initiatives that foster inclusivity, equity, and social-emotional learning such as PBIS (Positive, Behavioral Interventions and Supports)
  • Work with staff to implement anti-bullying programs and restorative practices.

4. Crisis Intervention-With Social Worker Supervision

  • Respond to critical situations such as abuse, neglect, grief, or suicidal ideation.
  • Provide immediate support and create safety plans when necessary.

5. Collaboration with School Staff and Families

  • Work closely with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other staff to address students' needs holistically.
  • Build strong partnerships with families to support students’ academic and social success.

6. Addressing Attendance and Behavioral Issues

  • Help identify the root causes of chronic absenteeism or behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborate with families and school teams to develop intervention plans that focus on support rather than punishment.

7. Ensuring Equity and Access
