COPE Health Scholar - Salinas Valley HealthAt — COPE Health Scholar Program at Salinas Valley Health [inactive]
COPE Health Scholars at Salinas Valley Health gain first-hand experience in a hospital setting, learn patient care skills, and become an integral part of the patient care team.
Scholars work directly with patients in their rooms and provide care such as feeding, ambulating, repositioning, changing, discharging, and accompanying to procedures that they may get to view. They assist with direct patient care alongside nurses, doctors, and other clinicians to prepare for a career in health care.
Graduates from the program earn a minimum of 280 clinical experience hours and a certificate from the Keck Graduate Institute in Patient Experience and Pre-Licensed Clinical Care.
NOTE: REQUIRES MORE HOURS THAN CSUMB SERVICE LEARNING REQUIREMENTS.
15 service learner spots

Scholars are trained through online modules that they watch at their own pace and then must pass a written exam with 80% or better. Afterward, there is hands-on training for the practical assessment. Scholars are also given Department Specific Trainings for each department they serve.
In addition to getting feedback from staff, we do rounding during their shifts. We are available via phone, text, and email and there is an "Emergency Pager" for incidents and injuries. We have a Leadership Team made up of scholars that offer additional support. We keep track of their hours and shifts in CORE ELMS.
Students may be required to work at night (after 6pm). Or, students may be supervised less than 50% of the time or the supervisor will be overseeing more than 8 people.
Scholars have the option to work shifts 3-7pm or 7-11 pm. There is security on the premises and it is well lit. Participants will be working with patients in the hospital. There is risk of injury or illness. Prevention is a large part of their training.
