As a law library that is open to the public and located in a court house and county building, and being one of two service desks that are open, we get everyone. We also work with previously incarcerated people that are working on restorative justice and/or may be coming in for parole and probation. We do have security measures in place. Our service desk is behind glass. We have security cameras. We are also located in the same building as the Sheriff's Office and have retired and current officers that provide regular security. We also have a security alarm button that we can press that goes straight to the Sheriff's Office dispatch.
Compassion fatigue can be a real thing, especially when you are trying to help someone in crisis mode due to frustrating and stressful situations. To combat this, I check in regularly with staff to make sure they are ok and know they can take additional breaks when needed and request time off if needed as well.
