Senior Center Recreation Leader InternshipAt — City of Huntington Beach
The Senior Center in Central Park is a large community center with thousands of members, volunteers, and visitors. It hosts hundreds of classes, special events, and rental opportunities for the community. Recreation Leaders at the Senior Center in Central Park are the front line staff members who interact with, engage with, assist, and offer support to the older adult community of Huntington Beach. They offer customer service and administrative support to older adults signing up for activities, memberships, appointments, and resources. Recreation Leaders assist with event coordinator, implementation, setup, breakdown, and more. Recreation Leaders ensure that facility rentals such as weddings and birthday celebrations occur smoothly, professional, and follow all policies and procedures.
Tasks:
-Provides information on social services offered at the Senior Center
-Provides excellent customer service both in person and over the telephone
-Collect fees and/or donations for recreation programs, classes, and events.
-Performs equipment set-up and break-down for programs, classes, and events.
-Assist with marketing by development program flyers, social media posts, banners, etc.
-Offer information related to our rental facilities to prospective community members looking to have a wedding, celebrate a birthday or retirement, host an HOA meeting, etc.
Completes a perform a variety of routine and semi-skilled tasks including but not limited to the following:
-Respond to customer inquiries
-Provide information regarding community program
-Register customers for recreational activities
-Help plan, direct and coordinate activities and special events
Training:
Tyra will complete a general City of Huntington Beach new employee orientation. Tyra will have one-on-one mentor training to learn and improve her skills with out recreation software. Tyra will shadow other part-time staff who have been in the role for 5+ years, as well as full-time Recreation Coordinators at events and facility rentals. Tyra will have biweekly meetings with her mentor (Recreation Supervisor) to discuss her internship and make changes/additions as necessary.
Learning Outcome:
1. Engage in effective communication with the older adult population, as well as encourage seniors to actively participate in wellness activities.
2. Understand the unique health needs of older adults by engaging directly with the Senior Center community, while also gain insight into the unique challenges and concerns that older adults face.
3. Work effectively within a large public sector team and community partners by helping with large scale events, assisting with weekly classes, solving customer service challenges, and completing tasks from various divisions within the Senior Center.
4. Have a basic understand of marketing techniques that are used in a public service setting to engage and educate the older adult population.
