Community Services InternAt — City of Fullerton, Councilmember District 3
Intern will assist the Councilmember in community relations and public services for residents of District 3. In the process, the intern will apply the Health in All Policies framework in creating and promoting community events. Intern will create a community newsletter for the Councilmember that will focus on public health education and informational notices related to Fullerton and public health issues.
1) Set up and staff community meetings for the public at large.
2) Promote and plan community meetings through working with professional city staff.
3) Create a community newsletter using Canva or similar graphic design program.
4) Draft minutes of community meetings.
5) Analyze community trends and needs in relation to the Health in All Policies framework.
Training:
1) Weekly check-in meetings with the Councilmember by Zoom.
2) Review of the Health in All Policies framework in the first meeting so that it can be applied throughout the internship.
3) Explanation of City Council function, composition, jurisdiction and duties.
4) Mentorship in leading community meetings and interacting with the public.
5) Training in a graphic design program, such as Canva.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the academic internship, the students will be able to:
1) Apply the Health in All Policies framework to actionable community events that will promote improving social determinants of health to improve community health outcomes,
2) Create a community newsletter that will provide health education and timely notices to the public at large.
3) Describe a City Councilmember’s responsibilities and jurisdiction.
4) Interact with the public in a professional manner and lead community meetings, reporting on findings to the Councilmember.
