JOB DESCRIPTION

The typical Montessori classroom is an active place with children moving about to select their work.  This does not mean that the class should be noisy or that children may be disruptive of the other children’s work environment.

a.    Receive and follow directions from the Teacher.

b.    Help the teacher with group activities inside and outside.

c.    Assist with collecting and making materials for classroom, cutting, pasting and laminating.

d.    Help with maintenance of an orderly classroom.

        1. Straighten boxes and put equipment on shelves in the right sequence.

        2. Replace chairs and tables correctly.

        3. Supervise children in putting items back in their correct place.

        4. Circulate to encourage quiet, constructive activity.

e.    Check paper towels, toilet paper, soap, soap dishes.

f.    See the environment is kept clean, including disinfecting all toys and plastics daily. Pay special attention to all door knobs where fingerprints are; helping to stop the spread of germs.

A. Classroom
1. Maintaining the Physical Environment
a. Receive and follow directions of the Teacher.b. Straighten boxes and place items on shelves In the right sequence.c. Replace correct chairs to correct tables.d. Check all materials for missing pieces.  Replace if you can.  If you cannot find them, make a list and hand it to the teacher.  Try to locate a duplicate piece in the storeroom.e. See that the children roll up and replace rugs nicely.f. Have art materials out, restocked; paste, paint, paper ready, market lids on and mats wiped off.g. Help the teacher with activities as directed.h. Cut metal inset paper 5 ½”x 5 ½,” keep supplies as needed.i. Assist in making materials for class, such as cutting, pasting, and laminating.j. Assist in finding materials, such as pictures and information about a certain holiday or for a special project.k. IMPORTANT!  See that any work and/or notes go home with child along with any personal items every Friday. 2. Keeping the Environment Clean
a. Always check that toilets are flushed:
1. at end of morning work period2. after lunch3. and at the end of the day b. Keep mop bucket clean and mop rinsed.  Do not leave mops dangling outside or inside where they are seen conspicuously.c. Check sponges at sink for cleanliness.d. Keep clean, dust or wash as needed shelves, tables, chairs pitchers, bowls, aprons, dust pan and brush, and polish exercise materials.e. Dust window sills as needed.f. Clean behind shelves at least monthlyB. Playground Supervision/Safety
1. Children’s safety is the number one priority.  Guard them with your life!  We are responsible for any injury occurring to a child during school time.
2. Station yourself in an area on the playground where you can see the children that you are responsible for.
3. NO SITTING OR TALKING TO THE OTHER STAFF MEMBERS unless absolutely necessary.  Keep eyes on the CHILDREN. 4. Stop at once any fighting, throwing of objects other than sports related ones, kicking, screaming, etc.
5. No running allowed on the sidewalks.
6. Children are not to climb fences, trees or unsuitable equipment.  They should never stand on chairs or tables.
7. Teach the child to say GOOD-BYE to you and shake hands before leaving with a parent.  YOU MUST be aware of the child leaving.
8. See that they learn to take care of the equipment, to return balls and such to their proper places, to pick up stray paper or trash and deposit it in the trash can.
9. Check bathrooms periodically.  Children are not to play in the bathrooms.
10. Do not yell at a child, only if he/she are about to do something to injure themselves or another child.
11. Isolate any child creating a real problem.  Tell the child to watch the others play.  DO THIS WITHOUT EMBARRASMENT TO THE CHILD.
12. When the children are in a line or walking through the house, they are to be quiet and keep hands off of furniture and walls.
13. Take an active interest in their physical activities.  Study how they relate and their development.  Help if the need arises to organize games.
14. Use GOOD JUDGEMENT and COMMON SENSE.  Mentally review what you would do in an emergency.  But try to prevent one before it happens.
15. Use of tools needs permission and supervision.
16. Water play needs permission and close supervision and is also limited to small groups.
17. Climbing trees, fences or gates is not allowed.
18. Do not allow the children to throw sand, rocks, sticks or toys.  Also, watch for little ones putting objects in their mouths.
19. Anything overly rough or out-of-control should be stopped and redirected.
20. Playground equipments are to be cared for and put in it’s proper place after use.  It is preferable that an adult oversees, while the children perform the tasks responsibly.
21. Do not stand on chairs or tables when hanging things up; use a step stool instead.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to successfully perform duties and responsibilities of a teacher assistant in a Montessori environment.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to lead circle time, and music and movement
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to plan and implement crafts in a small group setting.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to understand and meet the child's physical, emotional, and social needs.
