Organization Description

The Monterey County Health Department exists to enhance, protect, and improve the health Monterey County residents and environments. MCHD provides a wide variety of health-related services in the areas of behavioral health, clinic services, emergency management services, environmental health, public guardianship, and public health.

Program Information

General Description of what students will be doing at this Site: The Monterey County Health Department’s Healthy Aging Program is seeking a student intern to participate in an internship to support prevention and education activities to promote older adult and cognitive health. The intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist the program specialist with community presentations and implementing the Healthy Brain curriculum. The Healthy Brain curriculum encompasses education on senior and brain health with an emphasis on cognitive decline risk factors, early detection, and modification of risk factors. In addition, the intern will assist with a variety of public health projects and tasks.

Key Responsibilities: The intern position will assist the Healthy Aging Program Specialist in establishing and conducting Healthy Brain workshops for older adults. Intern will:

Facilitate workshops to older adults about Healthy Brain to promote cognitive health, healthy lifestyles that support brain health and early detection of dementia

Raise participant’s awareness and knowledge of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and cognitive risk factors

Empower older adults to take steps in adopting healthy lifestyles that promote healthy brain and healthy aging

Connect older adults to community agencies and resources

Research and develop senior and brain health education materials

Prepare materials and content for senior health workshops

Assist in administering program evaluation activities

Entering and tracking program data

Supporting with other program activities and assignments

Desired Intern Characteristics: Be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities to:

• Speak, read and write in Spanish

• Make oral presentations both in English and Spanish

• Enter data into Excel spreadsheets and use Word to compose written materials

• Ability to travel to and from multiple locations using their own vehicle and possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

Special Considerations: Strong communication and pubic speaking skill, speak, read, and write in Spanish, can work independently and is comfortable interacting with the public.

Interprofessional opportunities available for the student: The intern will have opportunities to participate in a variety of learning activities and meetings at the Health Department to gain a greater understanding of public health.

Trainings/ staff meetings offered or required: The intern will have opportunities to participate in a variety of learning activities and meetings at the Health Department to gain a greater understanding of public health. Meetings may include staff, coalition, and committee meetings with community partners.

The internship normally runs during weekdays, however, some occasional evening meetings and weekend events may be required. Hours are somewhat flexible in an effort to accommodate program activities and workshop schedules.
