REMOTE Academic tutoring for disadvantaged K-12 studentsAt — CovEducation
Looking for a way to give back to the community? Passionate about educational equity? Join CovEd in providing mentorship to K-12 youth! We are currently seeking undergraduate/postgraduate/grad students to volunteer virtually as mentors for K-12 students, particularly those with limited access to educational resources. If you’d like to connect with a student, please consider signing up to be a mentor at bit.ly/coved-csu-mentor-signup! Mentors serve not only as a source of academic support, but as role models for the student they work with. This will provide an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to students who have trouble accessing learning materials and mentorship.
-How to recognize signs of and support students through mental/emotional stress, via socioemotional learning curriculum
- A diverse range of mentorship styles and how to tailor them toward their mentee's strengths and challenges.
- Training in pedagogy, workload management, and socioemotional skills before working with students
- How to adapt to and provide feedback on mentorship effectiveness when working with students and peer mentors
- How to engage students in a virtual learning environment.
Students will be required to attend a one-hour training on Zoom before they start mentoring. We have worked with Research Professors from UC San Diego (Sally Sadoff), Brown University (Matthew Kraft), and Bentley University (Jeff Livingston) to develop a mentor training curriculum for effective pedagogy, student engagement, recognizing signs of mental/emotional stress, and socioemotional skills. All mentors are required to undergo a two-hour training workshop, and will be provided a detailed, week-to-week guideline on interacting with mentees. In addition, there will be peer-led meetings and supervised mentorship sessions to offer feedback on mentorship and allow mentors to adapt to and learn from new styles.
Photography and videography is not allowed.
Are there any evaluations/surveys that will be requested of students? Yes
