Opportunity Summary 

This is an opportunity to work in collaboration with the founders of Cambodia Town to celebrate Khmer New Year. This even brings visitors from around the world and is the largest and oldest Khmer New Year parade in the US.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

o Better understand the history of Cambodian American refugees through cultural engagement o Engage with local Cambodian American community in Long Beach; o Develop social, presentation, writing and analytical skills that further career development.

Opportunity Training 

Throughout the semester, students have been learning about the experiences of Cambodian Americans through the intersecting categories of gender, generation, race, and class. Through civic engagement in Long Beach, that is, “learning by doing,” they will further delve into how the diverse experiences of Cambodian Americans can be integrated into improving the world around us. In other words, they will realize how the themes of memory, resilience, and cultural continuity are central and applicable to their everyday lives and broader career goals. These skills are integral irrespective of whatever jobs or positions they may find themselves in, as civic engagement is at the core our bettering our world.
