Academic InternAt — The Veterans Art Project

Opportunity Summary 

This internship opportunity will allow for students to further develop their writing, communication, and digital skills through hands-on work with a small non-profit dedicated to direct action. Interns will be exposed to opportunities in Arts learning and administration, and will work closely with all members of staff and participants, including the executive director, executive assistant, grant writers, art therapists, instructors, and Veteran artists. VETART tailors its internships to the interests of the individual in the following areas: social media management, accounting, studio management, Arts instruction, grant writing and fundraising, behavioral health advocacy, exhibit curation or event planning. The VETART team is committed to the mission of bolstering individuals' desired soft and hard skills, and each individual has direct access to every member of the administrative team to identify and develop these personal goals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Interns may have a grasp of the following skills by the end of their internship: Students will develop an advanced understanding of non-profit operations in advocacy, grant writing, direct community action goals, project management, event planning, and accounting through a highly involved experience. The involved nature of this internship necessarily includes interacting with a diverse population of Veterans and their integrative community. Students will therefore learn and be expected to practice cultural competency and interpersonal skills. Students will have opportunities to practice advocacy through public speaking and attending legislative and behavioral events. Furthermore, students will gain a sophisticated ability to collaborate with a team in a fast-paced environment

Opportunity Training 

Students will work closely with professionals including the Executive Director, grant writers, peer support specialists, advocates, and others to develop comprehensive skills that are broadly applicable.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students may be exposed to clay dust and other hazards associated with an art studio.
