Internship Description:

\n

The Summer Reading Camp Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing a summer literacy program aimed at promoting reading skills and fostering a love of reading among children and adolescents. The coordinator will plan and coordinate program activities, and monitor program effectiveness.

\n

Responsibilities:

\n

    \n
  • Develop and implement a curriculum for the summer reading camp, incorporating age-appropriate activities and materials to support literacy development.
  • \n

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and stakeholders to provide updates on camp activities and children's progress.
  • \n

  • Support program logistics, including setting up and cleaning up camp sessions, organizing materials and supplies, and managing participant attendance.
  • \n

  • Assist in monitoring participant progress and engagement throughout the summer, collecting data and feedback to assess program effectiveness.
  • \n

  • Assist in administrative tasks, such as maintaining participant records, preparing program materials, and communicating with parents/guardians.
  • \n

Qualifications:

\n

    \n
  • Currently enrolled in a program in Children and Adolescent Studies, Education, Literacy Studies, or a related field.
  • \n

  • Passion for promoting literacy and supporting children's academic success, with a genuine interest in working with children and adolescents.
  • \n

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to plan and coordinate program activities effectively.
  • \n

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with children, families, staff, and volunteers.
  • \n

  • Previous experience working with children and adolescents, particularly in educational or literacy-focused settings, is preferred but not required.
  • \n

  • Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • \n

Note:

The center is located in Richmond Park, which is not rated as the safest neighborhood in Fullerton. We have never had an incident, and all our interns and clients are never left alone. The area is well-lit, and we have 24-hour police surveillance cameras installed outside our center.

Tasks:

\n

1. Program Management Skills:
o Task: Develop a weekly schedule for the reading camp, including reading sessions, literacy activities, and snack breaks.
o Project: Gather feedback from staff, and campers to identify preferences, interests, and areas for improvement. Establish a framework for the weekly schedule, including designated time slots for reading sessions, literacy activities, snack breaks, and free play. Choose engaging literacy activities aligned with camp goals, such as interactive read-alouds, writing workshops, vocabulary games, and storytelling sessions.
o Assignment: Create a resource inventory list for the camp, ensuring that all materials needed for activities are stocked and organized.

2. Problem-Solving and Adaptability:
o Task: Address a behavioral issue with a camper using positive reinforcement and behavior management strategies.
o Project: Modify the camp schedule to accommodate inclement weather or unexpected changes in resources or staffing.
o Assignment: Reflect on a challenge encountered during the internship and propose potential solutions and strategies for future prevention.

3. Literacy Instruction Techniques:
o Task: Lead a small group literacy session focused on a specific reading skill (e.g., decoding, fluency, comprehension).
o Project: Develop a themed literacy unit for the camp, incorporating books, activities, and discussions centered around a common topic or theme.
o Assignment: Analyze the effectiveness of different literacy instruction techniques through pre- and post-assessment data collected from campers.

4. Cultural Competence:
o Task: Incorporate diverse literature and multicultural activities into the camp curriculum to celebrate cultural diversity and promote inclusivity.
o Project: Organize a cultural exchange day where campers learn about different cultures through music, and storytelling.
o Assignment: Reflect on personal biases and assumptions, exploring how they influence interactions with campers and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
