Fight Food Waste and Hunger at a Fruit Harvest or Farmers MarketAt — Food Forward
Farmers Market Recovery: Recover produce, fight hunger, and build community at your local farmers market! We "glean"---meaning we collect fresh, surplus produce that would otherwise go to waste--and donate 100% to local hunger relief organizations. Help collect fruit and vegetable donations from farmers market vendors, and then box, sort, and weigh donations.
Backyard Harvest: Harvest food, fight hunger, and build community! We harvest beautiful, fresh fruit that would otherwise go to waste and donate 100% to local hunger relief organizations. Help harvest as much fruit as possible from trees, and then place into boxes for donation.
Students may register for as many/few events as desired via our volunteer calendar: foodforward.org/volunteer-calendar. We cannot guarantee students will be able to complete a specific number of hours, but are happy to confirm all hours they complete. Volunteers don’t need to bring equipment or transport food. Events are 1.5-2 hours long.
By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned... knowledge of and experience with produce recovery work, food waste, and food insecurity; deeper understanding of local fruits and veggies; and how partnerships between organizations can work.
Students will receive an orientation on site at the event, given by a trained Volunteer Event Leader. If students are interested in training as volunteer Event Leaders, staff provides multiple trainings.
Depending on the program, volunteers should be comfortable harvesting and carrying boxes of fruit that may weigh up to 20-40 pounds but can volunteer with someone who can help them lift if that is too heavy.
