Wheatland Union High School District

Organization Description

Wheatland Union High School District is a small, rural 9th-12th district located in southeast Yuba County. The district includes a comprehensive high school, a community day school, and a continuation school on site. We are a Community School model, which means our school site operates as a hub for social services within the community, including resource distribution (food, housing, clothes), medical care, and comprehensive mental health care. We have a wellness center on site and have a team of social workers and therapists to provide services to students and families. We also support a robust McKinney-Vento and foster support program, which has been recognized by the state as a Model Innovation Program.

Program Information

Working under the supervision of the Director of Community Schools (LCSW and foster/homeless liaison), students will have the opportunity to provide individual and group school-based therapy to students, provide direct support to students who drop into our Wellness Center and triage mental health needs, conduct risk assessments as needed, attend school-based case management meetings (IEPs, SSTs, 504s, CFTs, SARTs, etc.), observe and provide support for Parent Project parenting classes, provide support for Tier I interventions such as PBIS, classroom social-emotional lessons, and learn about all aspects of school-based mental health services and school social work. In addition, students will be able to provide support for community schools initiatives on site, including food bank distribution, family resource center programs, McKinney-Vento (homeless) program support, foster youth program support, housing coordination, attendance, home visits, and additional programs as identified. Students will have the opportunity to provide support at both a comprehensive school and alternative education programs.

Health & Safety

Students will be working at a high school and could be exposed to routine illness, bloodborne pathogens, or aggressive behavior in students. The risk is likely low.
