Adult Literacy TutorAt — Placentia Library District
The Adult Literacy Tutor Intern provides English reading, writing, speaking and listening tutoring and may also include digital literacy instruction and GED/HiSET test preparation tutoring to adults on a weekly basis. The intern may assist with small group classes including program setup, teaching, and clean-up after the class. Interns average 8-10 hours per week working with multiple students and various projects. Schedules can include weekday, weeknight, and weekend hours when the library is open. An interview and fingerprinting are required prior to internship start date.

The intern will spend 80% of their time developing lesson plans and implementing them with their students. The remaining 20% will be spent on documenting tutoring activities. All tutoring takes place at the library with supervision.

Training:

The intern will complete up to 8 hours of literacy training with the Coordinator and online learning program. The intern will participate in weekly meetings with their supervisor.

Learning Outcomes:

- Demonstrate and develop tutoring skills for tutoring English and/or computer skills to adults.
• Create lessons for weekly meetings based on student needs and evaluation thereof. Interns are encouraged to take initiative and work well under guidance from Literacy Coordinator.
• Interns will be matched with multiple students. Interns will meet weekly with students for a minimum of one hour per session.
• Participate in orientations and online trainings. Learning the names, strengths and weaknesses of the learners.
• Analyze pronunciation, spelling, and grammar to best inform English language learners.
• Demonstrate organizational skills as they will be responsible for observation, assessment, and documentation of progress for multiple students.
• Maintain professional attitudes and relationships with students and staff members.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Demonstrate awareness of personal responsibility as a representative of the Placentia Library District.
• Understand library policies and procedures.
• Maintain a courteous, cooperative, and professional relationship with the entire library staff, patrons, and literacy students.
