House Mother InternAt — Casa Teresa
Casa Teresa is a trauma-informed maternity shelter that provides pregnant women in crisis a loving home to begin their healing journey.
The House Mom role gives human service interns an opportunity to survey various tasks that are performed by entry-level personnel working in the social service field. With supervision from House Moms, the intern will obtain the following responsibilities.
- Assist with the monitoring of Resident classes.
- Assist Residents with miscellaneous needs.
- Assist with babysitting.
- Assist with House Mom organized classes, events, and projects.
- Assist with household organizing and cleaning.
Tasks:
- Roleplay crisis intervention
- Interacting with clients and staff in appropriate manners
- Document concerns and immediately report them
- Consult supervisor on ways to learn/ sitting in with other staff
Training:
- Allow the intern to observe crisis intervention
- Coach intern through professional experiences
- Debrief after sensitive interactions and provide feedback
- Provide supervision that guides while allowing development of independence

- Learn to deal with crisis
- Develop a professional demeanor
- Separate issues of self and client
- Use supervision wisely

\\Many of our population have a history of drug and alcohol use. There is zero tolerance regarding drug or alcohol use while living at Casa Teresa. Our safety measures include 24 hours supervision and cameras located inside and outside the building. Neighborhood watch program, strong relationships in the community, 24 hour staffing supervision. Staff are trained in conflict resolution. Students are trained to excuse themselves and locate a staff member to handle the situation. All residents are drug tested. Policies in place that prevent other relations or persons from entering facilities. Due to the nature of congregate living, there is an increased risk of communicable diseases. Staff and interns are expected to follow safety protocols to mitigate risks.\\
