Recreation/Activity Therapy InternAt — BHC Alhambra Hospital

Opportunity Summary 

Intern is responsible for assisting in planning and implementing activity services for assign program. This individual will aid in defining and executing treatment goals as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team and providing continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling under the direction/supervision of a Recreation Therapist (RTC).

Tasks:

The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by:
1) Preparing and conducting activity therapy session for adolescent and adult groups in timely manner.
2) Contribute to assessment and development of Tx plan with RTC.
3) Instruct patients in activity interventions and model appropriate social skills with little to no assistance from staff.
4) Observe, analyze, and record patient progress to treatment.

Training:

To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will:
Student will attend \\new hire\\ orientations prior the start of internship.
1) Have intern shadow RTC and assistant staff in daily duties (prepping, implementation of interventions, documentation, etc.)
2) Attend Tx plan meeting with intern to discuss patient action plan, progress, and discharge plan with various disciplines (therapist, psychiatric, nurses, etc.)
3) guide intern to learn various leisure activities, crafts, sports, and games used to educate patients.
4) Review patient charts and hospital documentation with intern.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, students will be knowledgably and able to:
1) Understand role and duties of RTC in a Psychiatic facility
2) Understand methods and procedures of treatment for giving population
3) Model and teach appropriate social skills, coping, and stress management
4) Communicate observations/ progress of patients in written documentation and oral report in Tx plan meetings.

Risk Note:

BHC is a psychiatric facility and thus our population can be unpredictable at times. Interns and staff will attend a mandatory 8-hour Non-Crisis Intervention (NCI) training course prior to start.
