FJUHSD AVID Tutor Qualifications:
- AVID tutors need to be excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that AVID students will succeed too.
- They should be enrolled at colleges or universities or have attended higher education.
- Tutors should represent balanced academic backgrounds.
- Tutors need to be able to work in a supportive manner with secondary students and be able to understand the delicate position they occupy; they are advocates for students, yet they are ultimately responsible to the AVID Coordinator/Teachers.
- Tutors must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the AVID Coordinator/Teachers about future tutorial plans if needed.

AVID Tutor Job Description
AVID tutors have the ability to guide students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their high school years. As an AVID tutor, you are an active participant in the learning, growth and personal development of students.
As a tutor, you are making a commitment to:
- Conduct tutorial (study group) sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching students through discussion of class and text notes.
- Determine from student tutorial request forms, notes and discussions the concepts that need to be the focus of the tutorial session.
- Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently.
- Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes.
- Assist in teaching study strategies and other aspects of college preparation.
- Communicate regularly with the AVID Site Coordinator and the AVID Elective Teachers regarding student progress and areas of concerns.
Tasks
Work with small groups of students
Support them through study groups
Encourage questioning and support in the student groups
Help look over TRF forms, Focused Notes, and Binders
Training:
We have in person training at the start of the school year to support you as a tutor. We do 6-8 hours of training before you start.
It will involve 2 days (3-4 hours a day) of in person training. The objectives of our training is for you to become familiar with the purpose and structure of the AVID College and Career Readiness System, ways to apply Costa's Levels of thinking to WICOR strategies and tutorials. Also ways to apply these steps during the AVID Tutorial Process, and instruct on how to lead an effective tutorial group. The training is interactive, and in person. You will have the opportunity to learn about different structures and systems in the schools, and how we can best support our students together.
