Opportunity Summary 

ROOTED is OCAPICA’s Youth Leadership and Development Fellowship that empowers high school students across the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) to become active leaders in their communities and future careers. Our mission is to unlock the potential of socially aware young leaders who are ROOTED in justice and who cultivate change for themselves and their communities. This program focuses on leadership through social justice, civic engagement, career development, and wellness (as known as the “4 Pillars of ROOTED”). ROOTED provides various opportunities, such as: building new connections with other students and program leaders, mentorship from program leaders, learning from panels of working professionals, professional development including leadership experiences, networking, attending college tours, open discussions on social justice topics, engaging with the community in civic engagement events, wellness workshops, self-growth/personal development, self-discovery, and so much more!

In Fall 2024, ROOTED will have 1 in-person, during school cohort: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Fridays at Gilbert High School. All school sites are in the Anaheim area. 

Intern Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Gilbert HS Cohort: Plan and facilitate weekly during school, in-person sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Fridays from 9 AM to 10:45 AM
  • Plan and facilitate supplemental sessions and events of various dates/days, times and locations
  • Participate in curriculum adjustment and development of program materials
  • Conduct outreach activities to promote services and recruit program participants
  • Host student engagement activities and provide peer mentorship
  • Attend all ROOTED Team Meetings
  • Help manage the Remind App
  • Create and manage social media content (create Instagram posts via Canva, etc.)
  • Create virtual make-up sessions with other interns 
  • Other projects as assigned to meet program and agency mission, goals, and objectives
  • Complete other tasks as assigned to meet program and agency mission, goals, and objectives.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Strong organizational, writing and communication skills
  • Ability to meet all deadlines and pay attention to details
  • Ability to work in diverse team of colleagues and communities
  • Ability to work with diverse ethnic and cultural communities including, but not limited to the following target populations: students of color, LGBTQIA+, and/or undocumented immigrants of varying ages between 13 to 18
  • Reliable Wi-Fi and access to both virtual (Zoom) meetings
  • Reliable transportation to and from sessions, events, meetings, etc.
  • Preferred skills in using Canva & Google Drive
  • Preferred bilingual capacity, preferably in Spanish and/or Asian language (e.g., Vietnamese)
  • Positive attitude and team player with strong leadership skills
  • Must be comfortable with the philosophy and goals of OCAPICA and ROOTED
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Regular attendance required
  • Live scan/background check required

- Weekly preparation meetings with team

Learning Outcome

- Facilitate and plan youth workshops and events
- Train and mentor high school youth leaders
- Work on a diverse team consisting of youth staff and interns
- Learn the structure of a nonprofit organization and how it operates
- Increase their interpersonal skills working with high school youth
