Zoo Volunteer/InternAt — Santa Ana Zoo
Join the Santa Ana Zoo education team in providing memorable experiences for the general public, school groups and community events. Zoo volunteers and interns assist in animal interaction areas (butterfly habitat, goat habitat, etc), presentation of education and outreach programs and general guest interaction throughout the zoo. Focused opportunities may be available with prior discussion. For the safety of our animals, animal care focused opportunities are not available.
- zoo interpretation skills - how to balance guest expectations and experience with animal safety - zoo education planning, development, preparation and execution for on and off grounds programs - basic animal habitat awareness and care (preparation for and after guest experiences) - professional meeting and communication
Training introduction is provided via pre-service orientations. On-site training begins during the first shift including site walks, on-line modules, 1:1 reviews of modules, shadowing staff at all positions. Additional task specific training is done as needed by full-time staff.
The zoo is an outdoor, public venue. Individuals are expected to interact with guests of all ages and backgrounds in an outdoor setting regardless of weather. Procedures are in place to monitor staff/volunteer health in both hot and cold conditions. Individuals are trained on safe interaction with animals they may come into contact with (including butterflies and goats).
