Reporter/Writer InternAt — EdSource

Opportunity Summary 

The intern will become a better reporter and writer through hands-on experience interviewing, writing and going through the editing process, and will participate in team meetings and will contribute to discussions on story ideas and other journalism topics with both fellow student journalists and EdSource staff and reporters.

Tasks:

Student interns will work on stories for publication at EdSource.org throughout the internship. This will consist of student-on-the-street interviews where they will approach students on campus with a specific question and write up the responses into a story; news or feature stories about issues going on at their campuses or in higher education in general; commentary on higher ed topics; and sometimes student reporters go to breaking news locations and report on activities there.

Training:

Training will consist of working with professional editors who help shape the student reporters's work. Detailed feedback about the student's writing is provided through rounds of edits. Interns also learn how to pitch stories that will be right for an EdSource audience, and they will attend twice-weekly team meetings, along with one-on-one meetings with the team's editor.

Learning Outcome:

At the end of this academic internship, students will have published reported stories and commentary; participated in editorial meetings with fellow student journalists and professional writers and editors; collaborated on stories with students from other universities in California;.
