Under the close supervision of a Business Taxes Administrator I with the assistance of a lead or senior team member, and in a learner capacity, the Student Assistant will be responsible for assisting in a wide variety of compliance activities as well as performing technical and support duties. On-the-job training and observation will be used to reinforce understanding and application of various work procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting team members in preparing cigarette and tobacco inspection documents and seizure reports. The student assistant will screen work product for completeness, and summarization of data to prepare reports.
Tasks:
Observes and assists leads and/or senior team members with summarizing data and preparing cigarette and tobacco inspection documents and seizure reports. Provides confidential technical support assistance to leads and/or senior team members. Inputs statistical information related to work assignments. Reviews work for completeness in meeting specific criteria with respect to items such as naming conventions, logging requirements, and other procedural requirements; Assists with maintaining and updating various databases and logs. Enters data into CROS and ITS; Scans various documents to be entered into electronic storage. Assists with assigning and disbursement of control documents and equipment throughout the state. Tracks and maintains various types of inventories. Utilizes office equipment to aid in logging, storage, and producing final work product.
Assists, observes, and shadows Inspectors with conducting inspections of less complex businesses that sell cigarettes tobacco products and cannabis to identify compliance issues with the tax laws administered by CDTFA. Assists with documenting field observations and recording inspection findings. Assists with conducting background investigations using CDTFA computer systems, the Investigations Tracking System and other background research tools deemed necessary to ascertain true ownership and to avoid compromising an active criminal investigation. Acts as general support for the Tax Investigations and Inspections Bureau teams. Attends training sessions to enhance their understanding of the work processes. Responsible for coordinating and sending correspondence both internally and externally.
Training:
Mandatory training conducting through our Learning Management System. These mandatory training includes Information Disclosure Training, Ethics, Information Security Training, and Sexual Harassment and Preventing Training,
The Student Assistant will also attend short training sessions and/or observe procedures to enhance their understanding of the Investigations and Inspections work processes.
In addition, the student intern supervisor will provide the following training: CROS will include close supervision, and in a learning capacity, the Student Assistant performs routine accounting functions, generating and reconciling reports, processing correspondence, maintaining logs, and assisting staff with assignments. Knowledge of computer software programs, good communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills required.
Training used to post various registers, including Cash Receipts, Cash Disbursements, Offsets, and Plan of Financial Adjustments using personal computers and various Microsoft software programs.
Training to reconcile reports to source documents, bank reconciliation, and fund reconciliation. Inputs revenue data using CDTFA's CROS and FI$Cal.
Training to post journal entries and monthly register entries into the General Ledger and generates reports for the various industries.
Training to provide assistance to staff in processing and distributing correspondence, answering telephones, maintaining logs, and preparing year-end closing documents.
Training to perform special projects.
Training on how to assist staff in gathering data and preparing schedules, worksheets, and reports.

Here are some learning outcomes for our accounting student intern:
1. Financial Statement Analysis: The intern will be able to analyze and interpret financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, to assess the financial health of a company.
2. Accounting Software Proficiency: The intern will develop proficiency in using accounting software (ex: CROS, QuickBooks, Excel) to manage financial data, perform bookkeeping tasks, and generate reports.
3. Understanding of GAAP: The intern will gain a solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and be able to apply these principles in day-to-day accounting tasks.
4. Audit and Compliance: The intern will become familiar with audit procedures and compliance requirements, learning how to prepare for and assist in internal and external audits.
5. Ethical Decision-Making: The intern will understand the ethical standards in accounting, learning to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas in a professional manner.
6. Communication Skills: The intern will develop the ability to communicate financial information clearly and effectively to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
