BGCLAH Youth Development ProfessionalAt — Boys and Girls Club of The Los Angeles Harbor
Power Hour is an engaging homework help and tutoring program that encourages Club members of every age to become self-directed learners. Members can take advantage of tutors, small group study sessions, and educational resources that are available during power hour. Tutoring and homework help, in every subject and grade, are available daily for every member. Tutors assist members and provide 1-on-1 help that they may not receive at school or home.
Targeted subject programs aim to identify members who are having difficulty in a specific area and provide the resources needed for them to succeed. We strive in our three A's within our organization and this covers academics, which is something we need support with the most.
-1-on-1 tutoring with members
-1-on-1 homework help, reading, and general assistance
-Encourage different learning methods if concepts aren't easily grasped by members
-Offer literacy, reading, math, writing, and/or science instruction
-Assist staff in the Learning Centers
-Offer some level of mentorship for our members
Our second A is for athletics, and we could use help with coaching for our basketball and soccer leagues, as well, as support in our gym and outdoor arenas with running activities, ensuring safety, and supervision. Very similar to P.E activities and more.
Our third A is for arts, and we could use help with our arts academy program and support in our art centers with activities we run day-to-day. Arts and crafts, painting, drawing, etc. of all different skill levels.
We emphasize tutors and academics, but we are also opening this internship up for our arts and athletics departments.
Training:
Students are given a Youth Volunteer Handbook which lists expectations, policies, and procedures. They are also expected to complete a background check, submit a volunteer application, complete two online training videos, submit two references that we will reach out to, and attend an orientation.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to identify members and the specific area(s) they are struggling with, utilize the resources available to assist members, be able to initiate assistance and encourage members to learn and have fun within our three A's.
