BBMT InternAt — Bob Baker Marionette Theater

Opportunity Summary 

The focus of this internship will be within the pre-production of our upcoming show Choo Choo Revue and the archive of Rene Zendejas, featuring 1000's of original concept drawings, production notes, puppet engineer designs, costume patterns, personal files of puppeteers, documents on Los Angeles History, and more. The internship will involve reviewing and cataloging the above, as well as digitally scanning where necessary.

Tasks:

1) Organize and Catalog Archive Materials:

Sort and organize physical and digital archives, including scripts, concept art, photographs, and performance records.
Create and update catalog entries, ensuring accurate descriptions, dates, and metadata for easy retrieval.

2) Document Concept Art:

Photograph or scan concept art, sketches, and design documents.
Label and annotate digital images with relevant information, such as artist names, dates, and project details.
3) Assist with Digital Archiving:

Upload and manage digital files in archival databases or content management systems.
Ensure that digital records are backed up and securely stored.

Learning outcome:

1) Understand Arts Nonprofit Operations and Management:
Gain insight into the day-to-day operations of an arts nonprofit organization. Learn about the challenges and opportunities unique to the nonprofit sector, especially in the performing arts.

2)Develop Archival Management Skills:

Learn best practices for organizing and maintaining physical and digital archives, including cataloging, preservation techniques, and data management.
Understand how to create and implement archival systems that ensure easy retrieval and long-term preservation of historical materials.

3) Enhance Documentation and Research Abilities:

Gain experience in documenting concept art, including capturing, labeling, and describing artwork accurately.
Develop skills in researching and contextualizing art and design elements, including understanding the historical and creative significance of the materials.

4) Improve Technical Skills in Digital Tools:

Acquire proficiency in using digital tools and software for archiving, such as databases, photo editing programs, and digital asset management systems.
Learn how to create digital records and backups to ensure the security and accessibility of archived materials.

5) Understand the Role of Archives in Organizational History:

Explore how maintaining an archive supports the nonprofit theater’s mission, history, and legacy.
Learn how archives contribute to the organization’s storytelling, educational programs, and community engagement.
