Opportunity Summary 

Under supervision, assist in education, health and safety of children ages 18-83 months. Participate in implementation of developmentally appropriate programs that promote learning of language, communication, emergent literacy, social cognitive play and creative skills.

: Student intern will shadow various preschool teachers and actively assist them in caring for and teaching preschool children, ages 18 months through 5 years. These teaching tasks include receiving instructions from the lead teachers so that the intern learns how to teach the children basic age-appropriate social, problem-solving, art, math, science, and language skills. The children will be taught both one-on-one and in groups, as directed by the lead teachers. The intern will be instructed in how to use age appropriate teaching techniques such as games, storytelling, experimentation, art, music, math, science, and play.

Training:

Student intern will receive the following training from lead teachers: General employer-intern orientation, which includes what the expectations are for intern behavior, communications, schedules, and timelines. Specific introduction and orientation for internship duties, such as how to interact with and teach the children in respectful, safe, and age-appropriate ways. Intern job shadowing, as described in item 5 above. Weekly one-on-one mentoring meetings between the intern and assigned mentor and the intern and other lead teachers. Intern participation in teacher workshops/skill training, wherein the intern will be provided with teaching samples, training literature and testing, and helpful reviews of and recommendations pertaining to the intern’s work.

Learning Outcomes:

Student intern will learn teaching skills and gain valuable teaching and mentorship experiences through her participation in Saddleback College Child Development Center’s internship program. These skills and experiences include training on how to develop and utilize excellent preschool instructional teaching practices, how to interact with and build rapport with other teachers, students, parents, other community members, and staff, how to communicate with people effectively and positively, how to manage time, work as a cohesive teaching team, reach out and work to solve any problems, and how to accept and handle constructive criticism.
