Legal InternAt — Pala Band of Mission Indians - Legal Department
Join our in-house counsel for a unique, hands-on experience addressing a variety of legal challenges faced by the tribe. Interns will gain valuable insight into the complexities of tribal law and governance, while working closely with our legal team. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to meet with tribal leaders to discuss their perspectives on key issues impacting Indian Country, including recent legal rulings and their broader implications.
By the end of this internship, participants will have developed a deep understanding of the legal framework governing tribal sovereignty, as well as the unique legal issues faced by Indian Country. Through direct engagement with our in-house counsel and tribal leadership, interns will gain expertise in interpreting and applying federal, state, and tribal laws that impact tribal governance, land use, and community welfare. Interns will sharpen their legal research and writing skills by assisting with case preparation, drafting legal documents, and reviewing legal rulings. They will also develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by analyzing legal challenges and proposing solutions in the context of both litigation and tribal advocacy. Additionally, interns will enhance their communication and interpersonal skills by participating in discussions with tribal leaders, gaining insight into leadership perspectives on policy issues and the importance of culturally appropriate legal strategies. This experience will prepare interns for careers in Indian law, governmental legal work, or advocacy roles focused on protecting Indigenous rights.
The intern will be supervised by our in-housel counsel. He, along with a small support team, will guide research. Tips will be given on note-taking and presentations will be the intern will receive feedback from the support team after giving presentations. There will always be a team member available to assist the intern when needed.
We may spend time outdoors in the field.
