Counseling Center Intern/VolunteerAt — Able Mediation and Counseling Services (AMCSI)
We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate intern or volunteer to assist with client intakes and co-facilitate group classes. This role provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the mental health field, work with diverse populations, and develop clinical and facilitation skills.
Key Responsibilities:

Client Intake:
- Conduct initial intake interviews with new clients, collecting necessary background information.
- Assist clients in completing required paperwork and ensure accurate documentation.
- Assess client needs and refer them to appropriate services or therapists within the center.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations in all client interactions.

Co-Facilitation of Group Classes:
- Assist lead facilitators in delivering group classes such as Parenting, Anger Management, Domestic Violence, etc.
- Help manage group dynamics and ensure a supportive environment for all participants.
- Contribute to the preparation of class materials, including handouts and activities.
- Take notes on group progress and contribute to the overall class report.
- Encourage participant engagement and provide support to individuals when necessary.
Training:
The intern/volunteer will receive comprehensive training to prepare them for the key responsibilities in their role. The training will be divided into two phases: a 2-week online training program, followed by 3 opportunities to shadow experienced clinicians in both client intake and group facilitation settings.
Phase 1: 2-Week Online Training
The online training component will provide foundational knowledge to help the intern/volunteer understand their role, the policies of AMCSI, and the best practices in client intake and group facilitation.
Week 1: Introduction to AMCSI and Client Intake Procedures
AMCSI Overview:
Mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Services provided (e.g., individual counseling, psychological testing, group classes).
Overview of the populations served, including individuals with mental health challenges and co-occurring issues.
Client Intake Process:
Introduction to intake procedures, including scheduling, conducting interviews, and required documentation.
Review of key assessment tools and forms used during the intake process.
Confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, focusing on handling client information with care.
Cultural competence and sensitivity training to ensure respectful and inclusive client interactions.
Week 2: Group Class Co-Facilitation
Group Dynamics and Facilitation Skills:
Basics of group dynamics, including managing different personalities and group cohesion.
Techniques for promoting group participation and maintaining a positive environment.
Co-Facilitation Guidelines:
Roles and responsibilities as a co-facilitator (supporting the lead facilitator, managing discussions, encouraging participation).
Specifics on classes offered by AMCSI (Parenting, Co-Parenting, Anger Management, Domestic Violence).
Strategies for handling challenging group situations, such as conflicts or emotional distress.
Preparation for Shadowing:
What to observe and take note of during shadowing opportunities.
Introduction to reflective practice: how to process and apply what is learned during shadowing.
Phase 2: Shadowing Opportunities
Following the online training, the intern/volunteer will participate in three shadowing sessions with experienced clinicians. This phase allows for practical, hands-on learning in a supervised setting.
Shadowing Client Intake:
The intern/volunteer will observe an experienced clinician conducting the full intake process with new clients.
Focus areas will include rapport building, asking relevant intake questions, and completing necessary documentation.
After each session, the intern/volunteer will have a debriefing with the clinician to discuss what they observed and ask questions.
Shadowing Group Class Facilitation (Session 1):
The intern/volunteer will observe a group class facilitated by a licensed therapist. They will watch how the facilitator manages group dynamics, presents content, and engages participants.
Observation of both content delivery and emotional support provided to group members.
Post-session discussion with the facilitator on strategies used and participant progress.
Shadowing Group Class Facilitation (Session 2):
During the second group facilitation session, the intern/volunteer will take a more active role in supporting the class (e.g., assisting with activities, answering participant questions).
Continued focus on group management techniques and facilitation strategies.
Debrief after the session to reflect on their experience and receive feedback from the lead facilitator.
Ongoing Supervision and Support:
Throughout the placement, the intern/volunteer will receive regular supervision and feedback from the clinical team. They will have the opportunity to ask questions, reflect on their experiences, and progressively take on more responsibilities as they gain confidence.
This structured training ensures that the intern/volunteer is well-prepared and supported as they step into their role.
