Graphic Artist and Communication Specialist InternAt — Salesian Family Youth Center

Opportunity Summary 

The Salesian Family Youth Center serves underprivileged children from Boyle Heights and the surrounding areas of Los Angeles. The main job of the intern is to research, design and create marketing material that will promote the mission of the organization.

Getting to know the audience by creating and analyzing research data of the audience
Interviewing staff members to see the needs of the communication, graphic design or marketing strategy
Create a time-line of action steps
Oversee production line of graphic and design elements from the conceptualization to the creating of the art
Create drafts and look for feedback from audience and staff to proceed with final product
Marketing in social media the final product
Evaluating outcomes of the product

Training:

The intern will have to go over an online training in the mission and vision of our organization, this training will give them the backbone of who we are and what we do at the clubhouse. After this initial training, the intern will meet with the Executive Director once a week for one-on-one mentoring while providing a general overview of connecting with the audience. The Director holds a Master Degree in Business Administration and a Doctorate in Sociology.
The student will be working alongside with the Executive Director. Who has experience working on website designs, Adobe product, Marketing and communication.

Learning Outcomes:

1. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to digitally design collateral ready for print such as flyers, posters, postcards, banners, business cards, canvasses, booklets, magazines, calendars, vinyl wall stickers, wall decals, and clothing.
2. Follow through with the printing process such as: contacting a print company, placing orders and making sure student’s artwork is produced as intended.
3. Create compositions suitable for indoor wall murals and take idea to finish with different media that include latex paint, acrylics, and vinyl wall stickers and decals.
4. Research an audience to target specific groups that include children, teens, young adults, parents, and businesses to create media (print and digital) that communicate the messages requested by the job/client through his/her artwork.
5. Work in a team environment taking in suggestions, information, critiques, building off ideas, and in general collaborate with non-artistic staff.
6. Communicate and present artistic proposals/pitches in a professional manner.
