Community Health WorkerAt — Give For A Smile
Are you looking to work in a non-profit, grass-root, community outreach program? Do you have a passion for helping people of disadvantaged backgrounds? Do you want to have a flexible schedule?
If you said yes to all of these questions, then this internship is for you!
At Give For a Smile we strive to provide social assistance to the less fortunate families of all ethnic background while focusing on the Latinx communities of Orange County.
We have partnered with DHCS and Covered California. Our partnership with the Department of Health Care Services allows us to have direct access to CalBenefits portal to provide California benefits (Medi-Cal, Cal Fresh, Food Stamps, etc.) to California Residents. Our partnership with Covered California allows us to help our community of Californias apply for health insurance through the Covered California Health Care Providers, free of charge, as well as assist in the enrollment process and educate communities.
As an intern you will receive the proper training to help people become enrolled under a health plan from either Covered Ca or Medical. To provide Covered Ca enrollment services you must obtain the Covered Ca certification provided by the Covered Ca. University through our organization.
Requirements for the Internship:
Independent worker that can execute tasks with minimum supervision.
Available to work some evening and weekends when events require.
Applicant MUST speak Spanish.
We are currently partnered with the County of Orange and have full access to their county database, that has the information of everyone who resided within the county from 2010. With that we will teach the interns how to look for specific populations within this database to continue our outreach efforts.
We are also in the process of starting new programs for the upcoming year and rely heavily on the ideas and perspectives of our interns to bring these programs into fruition. We will give them parts of the program to create and then explain how everything goes together as we go through the grant to implementation process. Throughout that we will be partnering with other non-profits to do implement these programs.
Lastly, our organization focuses primarily on working with underrepresented communities and especially during these times, we are making sure to hear the needs of our communities and try to come up with solutions. The interns will be helping find resources while talking to community leaders to ensure that we are continuously updating our knowledge of community needs.
Training:
The interns will have the welcome meeting in which we go through the welcome packet that lays out everything they need to know about the organization and the volunteer packet which will lay out what is expected of them throughout their time with our organization.
We will also have two weekly meetings in which we check in on their progression of the tasks assigned. The internship director will focus more on the day to day activities of the interns and periodically check in on their progress while also being readily available whenever needed. All the training they will receive will depend on what role they are assigned and will be given from the internship supervisor.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to navigate county data bases and tailor the data to the vulnerable populations that is being looked for.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to spearhead new outreach programs in the community while working with community partners with minimal supervision.
