Health Education InternAt — Healthier Tomorrows
Provide support with projects related to increasing understanding of target population and their health education needs. Identify available resources to meet those needs and/or identify resources that Healthier Tomorrows can provide through current programming.
Tasks:
1-based on research, create a document of health education recommendations and best practices with target audience.
2-develop teaching materials, including PowerPoint, handouts, and pre/post-test on one identified health education gaps in Los Angeles County.
3-identify three community agencies in Los Angeles County that provide resources to meet identified needs and incorporate this information into the PowerPoint.
4-effectively implement research techniques to identify gaps in nutrition education among high-risk, low-income populations in Los Angeles County.
5-implement one in-person survey to support information-gathering and guide identification of best practices.
Training:
1-schedule an initial meeting to assess intern's knowledge of county necessary resources/education and research methods.
2-provide intern with list of research and planning tools commonly used in public health and assign time to navigate and increase familiarity.
3-schedule weekly meetings to discuss findings, discuss progress, and guide intern towards intended goal, or meet as needed.
4-create a template for desired teaching materials and discuss with intern to ensure understanding.
5-discuss peer-reviewed journals and their importance in health education.
Learning Outcome:
1-develop a thorough understanding of and be able to use public health tools and resources to plan and create health education materials.
2-become familiar with county health outcomes and learn how to use/interpret this information to fill educational gaps.
3-learn how to bridge together identified county health needs and organizational goals.
4-understand how to research and assess existing health education materials for use in organizational programs.
