Arts Integration InternAt — Everyday Arts

Opportunity Summary

Everyday Arts supports special education students by training their teachers in arts integration strategies proven to improve academic performance and social skills. Our hands-on workshop series includes artmaking, lesson planning, mentorship, reflection, and individualized coaching sessions for educators. The Arts Integration Intern will support every aspect of this process, including: participating in workshop planning meetings; co-facilitating visual and performing arts integration activities in workshops and classrooms; handling administrative tasks (such as distributing and collecting photo release forms and sorting arts supplies); documenting workshops (through photography and descriptive writing); participating in lesson plan meetings with classroom teachers; and assisting Lead Teaching Artists during family workshops.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Students will have learned the Everyday Arts methodology, which improves outcomes in academic learning, social-emotional learning, and arts learning by emphasizing student engagement; once students are engaged, their capacity for all learning is exponentially increased. We utilize the principles of Universal Design for Learning, a research-backed framework that optimizes teacher practice by providing multiple means of engagement for their students, as well as the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning “Core SEL Competencies,” which enhance students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal with daily tasks and challenges. Students will learn how to create an arts integration activity, how to plan an educator workshop, and how to facilitate visual and performing arts integration lessons in special education classrooms.

Opportunity Training

Students will receive an initial "onboarding" training remotely, which includes an overview of the organization and its educational philosophy. The remainder of training will occur throughout the internship, as students shadow Lead Teaching Artists and gradually increase their responsibilities.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Some classrooms contain students with severe behavioral challenges - specific instructions will be given on a case by case basis for how to safely interact with all students. Interns will never be in the room alone with students, and will always have the option of leaving the room if the environment is deemed unsafe.
