Opportunity Summary 

Position Overview

Volunteers will provide technical support and computer literacy education while helping refurbish computers for community distribution. This hands-on role combines direct adult education with practical computer hardware and software skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one computer literacy instruction to adult learners
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues
  • Handle technical support through multiple channels (in-person, phone, email, chat)
  • Process incoming computer donations
  • Disassemble and reassemble laptops and desktops
  • Participate in the RFRB (Refurbish) imaging process
  • Perform quality control checks on refurbished machines
  • Test and verify functionality of peripheral devices (printers, monitors, keyboards, etc.)
  • Maintain clean and organized workspace free if food/drink
  • Collaborate with other volunteers and staff as needed

Training

Complete training will be provided on RFRB processes, burn-in procedures, and specific position duties to ensure work is performed with understanding and minimal errors.

Safety Expectations

  • Follow safe practices when handling electrical components
  • Maintain clean workspaces free of food/drink
  • Properly organize and store tools and parts
  • Practice proper safety protocols

Schedule and Location

  • Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Minimum 4-hour shift commitment
  • Located in Salinas

Currently, we have two time blocks from 10-1 & 1-4, but the organization is willing to be flexible with students to accommodate those who cannot work around this schedule.

Requirements

  • Computer literacy and basic understanding of computer components (CPU, memory, hard drive)
  • Hardware repair skills
  • COVID vaccination
  • Business casual attire and closed-toe shoes required
  • Bilingual skills desired

Opportunity Training 

Training

Complete training will be provided on RFRB processes, burn-in procedures, and specific position duties to ensure work is performed with understanding and minimal errors.

Volunteers would be working specifically with our refurb manager and he would conduct basic training procedures.

To perform these responsibilities, the students will be placed with the program leads, who will mentor and guide them on how to perform the job. The training is hands-on and provides the opportunity for the students to make mistakes and learn from these mistakes without fear of being punished. Additional training will be provided when necessary.
