Opportunity Summary 

Assist senior scientist in the lab with cell-based and animal based research and experiments.

The student should write and keep a record of all experiments and work done in the lab in their lab book in a thorough detailed and clear language.
Presenting results and data in the form of a short summary with explaining the findings and conclusions to the mentor.

Training:

Abby will be taking a training course on stem cell culture (2 weeks period) to learn about the basics of working with stem cells.
In terms of her training, she'll have in person meetings with myself (Dr. Ghazaleh Eskandari-Sedighi) to discuss the experiments and results.
She'll be practicing reading, understanding and discussing scientific literature under my supervision.
She'll learn experimental design and recording the steps in a scientific platform (lab book, digital acrhived files, etc.)
She'll also attend the BLurton-Jones lab group meetings that happen once every 2-3 months.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
1) work with different types of stem cells and stem-cell derived cells including HPC and iMG.
2) Perform in vitro analysis on microglia such as phagocytosis assay
3) perform DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for genotyping transgenic mice
4) Make chemical solutions and buffers as well as in house made differentiation media for cell culture
