Physical Therapy InternAt — California Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy - FV Brookhurst

Opportunity Summary 

Physical therapy intern to observe and learn about the allied health field of physical therapy. The intern will take part in learning about the job duties of a physical therapist, physical therapy assistant, and assist the physical therapist with physical therapy aide duties.

The internship will entail volunteer and observation work in an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic (California Rehab & Sports Therapy - Fountain Valley). The intern will be shadowing physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and physical therapy aides in order to gain work related experiences. This will also include, but not limited to, housekeeping duties with the aides, shadowing physical therapists during initial evaluations, and observing PTAs with follow-up visits.

 

Tasks:

  1. The student intern will be able to work for 120 hours in the physical therapy clinic by the end of the semester.
  2. The student intern will be able to learn about the physical therapy field and understand the job duties by the end of the semester
  3. The student intern will understand how to apply and become a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant by the end of the semester
  4. The student intern will learn about the different fields of physical therapy by the end of this semester
  5. The student intern will be able to prepare a professional resume and cover letter by the end of the semester.

Training:

Aide training will consistent of review of our aide manual consisting of basic PT exercises commonly used in the clinic and movement patterns and daily job shadowing

  • The student intern will review HIPPA compliance forms and patient safety education with course instructor
  • The course instructor will review professional etiquette when working with patients, and when observing a physical therapist during an initial evaluation
  • The course instructor will review job safety and personal safety (e.g. exit routes, fire exits, etc.) with student intern
  • The student intern will receive job training on the first day of his internship to review exercises and housekeeping duties with course instructor and clinic staff

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will have observed 3-5 initial evaluations.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will have observed 10-15 patient treatments from a PT/PTA.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will have observed a total of at least 50 hours of patient care in the clinic.
