Research Assistant-N. AtagiAt — CSUF - Department of Child and Adolescent Studies

Opportunity Summary 

This internship is to be a research assistant in Dr. Atagi's lab. Research assistants in Dr. Atagi's lab assist with conducting research on development in linguistically diverse contexts. Additionally, research assistants help carry out day-to-day lab operations that are necessary for moving Dr. Atagi's scholarly activities forward. Research assistants' duties and responsibilities will include communication with and recruitment of potential research participants; collecting data from research participants; organizing and maintaining data; conducting preliminary analyses of data; and preparing study findings for dissemination. Research assistants will also engage in directed readings on the topics of bilingualism and literacy development with Dr. Atagi and her research team.

Learning Outcomes  

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to (1) recruit participants for a research study, (2) collect, maintain, and analyze human subjects data, (3) read, discuss, and synthesize literature on heritage bilingualism and literacy development, and (4) write and present about research findings.

Training  

To help the student achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will (1) meet weekly with the student via Zoom to discuss methods for participant recruitment, as well as data collection, maintenance, and analyses, (2) engage in joint annotation of readings using the program, Perusall, to help guide reading of scholarly articles, and (3) guide the student through the process of submitting to and preparing a poster for a student research conference.

Tasks/Duties  

The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by (1) attending weekly Zoom meetings, (2) recruiting participants for the study each week, (3) collecting and coding data each week, (4) reading at least one scholarly article each week as assigned, (5) submitting to a student research conference, and (6) writing a reflection essay at the end of the internship.
