Opportunity Summary 

HYBRID Housing Navigator Internship  

 

StandUp for Kids - Orange County was launched in 2003 with a single focus: to end the cycle of youth homelessness in our community. We work to provide basic needs, housing, mentoring support, care, and love to at-risk and homeless youth ages 12-24. The Housing Resource Development Intern provides support managing community resources in the area of youth and young adults housing. The Housing Resource Development Intern will become the expert in housing opportunities and strategies. Under the supervision of the Case Manager, casework support interns provide services and guidance for youth and assist with locating housing for them.

This is an unpaid internship.   

 

Essential Functions:  
Assist the Case Management team with core services such as sourcing household supplies and furniture, household set-up, orientation,  and related activities that support the client housing process  
Support the Case Management team’s efforts to link clients with appropriate educational, health and social services  
Teach youth how to operate video conferencing platforms such as Zoom  
Collaborate with the Case Manager to find residences that meet current client needs  
Use online search strategies and networking abilities to locate local housing options for clients  
Contact landlords and property managers to identify current vacancies  
Assist with the timely completion and filing of client records, documentation and case files  
Help with other case management-related tasks when needed.  
Spend at least 2 hours a week engaged in an activity with their mentees.   
Communicate with their mentee weekly—by telephone, Zoom or email—to keep in touch about what is going on in their lives.   
Honor, all commitments made to the mentee and StandUp for Kids   
Be respectful of the mentees time, opinions, and decision-making.   
Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors—e.g. patience, tolerance, and reflective listening.   
Be comfortable and able to establish appropriate boundaries with the mentee   
Be encouraging and supportive of the mentee.  
Help the mentee develop a milestone plan for completing short and long term goals.  
Provide linkage to other programs and services, including mental health, medical, vision, food, and employment.  
Minimum Commitment: Internships typically run for 10 hours per week for 3-4 months.   

 

Qualifications & Requirements  
Intern must be 18+ years of age.  
Submit an application, 3 forms of reference, and a copy of a photo ID.  
Pass a criminal background check and submit the $18 fee.  
Completion of all required orientation and training.  
Take and pass mandated reporting training online and provide certificate to supervisor.  

Learning Outcomes:

Must maintain regular attendance  
Must properly handle and maintain confidential information  
Submit hours once a month.   
Complete evaluation surveys as requested by staff.   
Successfully complete an interview for a mentor position with staff member.  
Be patient and understand the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time.   
Exhibit a genuine concern for homeless and at risk youth  

Remotely virtually working with all forms of communication available 
 
Educational Requirements  
Applicants must currently enrolled in an accredited college/university majoring in Social Work, Child Adolescent Studies, Psychology, Human Services, Public Health or similar field; or be a recent graduate who completed their degree in one of the above-mentioned fields.
