Opportunity Summary 

Learn how an outpatient clinic operates in regards to both physical & occupational therapy. This entails not only understanding the basics of patient care/customer service, but evaluations, treatment interventions, patient service representative tasks to keep a clinic running smoothly, and more. 

Tasks
Beat the greet. 1) Students will greet patients at the door, help them to sign into the Kiosk if warranted, and inform therapists that their patient is ready.

2) Students will learn how to schedule or reschedule less complicated cases/patients based on various insurance/auth considerations.

3) Students will learn how to prep simple modalities such as paraffin wax/hot packs prior to aide/therapist administering the modality.

4) Students will check inventory and put in orders for new supplies as needed.

5) Students will gather equipment/prep exercises for PT/OT patients under the guidance of therapist.

Training
Students will be trained on various aspects of:
1) Front Desk Administrative duties
2) PT/OT Aide duties within the scope of their internship
3) Education on common diagnoses and treatment interventions
4) Patient care management, from learning how to develop rapport/trust to solutions to solving patient problems/complaints.

Student will shadow physical therapists during evaluation and treatment sessions. Weekly scheduled meeting with therapist to evaluate student's progress. Therapist may assign supplemental research to assist with learning

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to identify the mechanisms & considerations that go into qualifying a patient to be seen by an OT and PT in an outpatient setting.

By the end of the academic internship, the student will have an understanding of the most common outpatient care diagnoses, effective treatment interventions and exercise prescription.

By the end of the academic internship, the student will have a better understanding of how an outpatient team, from the front desk rep, to the therapist, to PT/OT aide & volunteers, collaborate to provide excellent patient care.
