Opportunity Summary 

Unpaid: Academic Credit Required

Observation of PT, PTA, OT, COTA providing therapy for patients in out patient clinics.

This internship will focus on teaching and mentoring student relating to the field of physical therapy. Student is expected to learn how to be professional, improve interpersonal skill, assist patient with modalities, escort patient to treatment room, and assist PT aide on clinic cleanliness. Student will learn the basic of therapeutic exercise, the use of modalities, proper safety/fall precautions, assistive devices, and learn about PT professionalism/role. Student will be given literature review and reading materials as appropriate by PT.

Job shadowing of PT (physical therapist) or PTA (physical therapist assistant) 

General cleaning of treatment stations
Supervise patients with exercises

The student will be able assist the PT on setting pt up with modalities, escort patients to treatment table, assist PT to basic therapeutic exercises, and assist PT aide on clinic cleanliness.

Training:

Student mentorship on application process for PT and PTA schools
Job shadowing
Learn basic diagnosis and treatment

TrainingThe student with have 1 day orientation with the Physical Therapist. The student will be train by the office Admin, head PT Aide, and PT. The student will be mentor while on job shadowing, inservice from the PT and given handouts/literature for review.

Learning outcomes:

Have good understanding of the PT and PTA careers
Learn basic anatomy and physiology
Learn common PT diagnosis and treatment
Determine if PT field is correct choice

1. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to understand the role of a Physical Therapist.
2. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to set patient up with modalities (heat/ice/e-stim/ultrasound).
3. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to understand basic therapeutic exercises and functional usage.
4. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to understand the role of a Physical Therapist.
5. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to learn how to properly communicate with patients and display professionalism toward the field of Physical Therapy.
