Workforce Data Analyst InternAt — City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services
The Workforce Wellness Intern will support the Health Department’s efforts to enhance workforce wellness through data-driven decision-making and program implementation. This role provides hands-on experience with public health data, visualization tools, and research methods while also contributing to meaningful workforce wellness initiatives. This position will be located in the Workforce Development Office.
Tasks
- Review and update demographic data using the US Census Bureau
- Assist in the creation of the department demographic dashboard
- Support the development and distribution of workforce-related surveys
- Assist in analyzing survey results, identifying trends and patterns
- Assist in writing reports and creating data summaries for dissemination
- Assist with planning and implementing an End of Year All Staff Celebration
Training
Students will receive structured training to support their learning and skill development. They will begin with the New Employee Onboarding training, which provides an overview of the Health Department, its programs, and workplace expectations. Weekly one-on-one meetings with a supervisor will offer guidance, progress discussions, feedback, and professional development planning. Students will receive training on Microsoft Suite, including Automation and Forms, to assist with survey creation and data collection. Additionally, they will be trained on Tableau for data visualization and learn how to search for reliable data sources from government repositories to support workforce development initiatives.

By the end of the internship, the student will gain:
- An understanding of the Health Department’s programs, role in public health, and workforce development initiatives that support employee growth.
- Hands-on experience with data collection, analysis, and visualization using tools like Tableau and PowerBI to inform public health decision-making.
- Practical skills in designing and administering workforce-related surveys, analyzing reliable data sources, and reporting findings to diverse audiences.
- Experience in event planning and coordination, including logistics, time and resource management, and fostering a Culture of Caring.
- Networking and collaboration skills by engaging with various departmental bureaus
