- Help students with special needs understand their classroom lessons
Tasks
To demonstrate learning outcomes have been achieved, the intern student will:
• Assess student vocational strengths, needs, likes, and dislikes
• Lead small groups of students during transportation to and from vocational work sites
• Lead small groups of students during vocational training at volunteer work sites
• Assess student vocational performance
• Lead small groups of students during academic instruction
• Assess student academic performance
• Choose instructional materials to support student needs
• Prepare instructional materials
• Support students during instructional sessions
• Develop a list of community resources for students and their families
Training
To facilitate learning outcomes the student will:
• Attend an initial mandatory orientation (in person)
• Actively observe experienced teachers to learn effective teaching methods and strategies (in person)
• Attend and engage in weekly 30 minute one-on-one mentoring/debriefing (in person or remotely)
• Training from supervisor to navigate curriculum resources (in person or remotely)
• Training from supervisor on implementing and interpreting data from informal assessment tools (in person or remotely)
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to assess student academic and vocational skill needs. The student will use the assessments to identify and plan lessons and activities to address the vocational and academic needs of students. The intern student will learn strategies used in the field to help students understand academic and vocational tasks. The student will also learn to develop lists of critical community resources to be provided to students and their families.
