AVID TutorAt — Carlsbad Unified School District
As an AVID tutor, you will mentor and support first-generation high school students in their academic journey. Your role includes facilitating student-led tutorials, guiding discussions, and encouraging critical thinking to help students develop problem-solving skills. You will track student progress, provide feedback on coursework, and foster a collaborative learning environment. Additionally, you will serve as a role model, sharing college experiences and study strategies to help students prepare for higher education. This position provides hands-on experience in education and mentorship, helping students build confidence and academic success.
By the end of this opportunity, students will develop strong communication and leadership skills through facilitating discussions and mentoring high school students. They will gain experience in teaching strategies, active listening, and providing constructive feedback. Additionally, they will enhance their problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities by guiding students through academic challenges. Time management and organizational skills will improve as they track student progress and manage group dynamics. This role also builds cultural competency and empathy by working with diverse, first-generation college-bound students, preparing tutors for future careers in education, mentorship, or related fields.
Tutors will receive informal, on-the-job training from the AVID coordinator. Training will take place over the first few days of tutoring and will continue throughout the duration of service with ongoing guidance and feedback. Tutors will learn effective questioning techniques, facilitation strategies, and methods for tracking student progress through hands-on practice and observation.
