Compost Hub Support: SOW Collective Backyard FarmAt — LA Compost
Description At our Compost Hubs, food scraps collected from the community are transformed into nutrient-rich compost, and we need your help to make it happen! As a Compost Hub Support Volunteer, you’ll gain hands-on experience working alongside our knowledgeable Compost Managers. Get ready to leave feeling accomplished, a little sweaty, and brimming with new compost knowledge. ABOUT ACTIVITY: Roll up your sleeves and dive into a variety of engaging activities—whether it’s managing a three-bin system, tending to a compost pile, sifting finished compost, or exploring a mix of everything. There’s something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros! Plus, our Compost Hubs are situated in LA County’s most cherished green spaces: community gardens, urban farms, and beautiful parks. Join passionate community composters, learn to turn food scraps into rich compost, and connect with the local food system.
Please note that this opportunity is NOT hosted at the LA Compost Office. Instead, you will be reporting to the relevant compost hub location that is available and listed in S4. For more information on which specific location you will be reporting to for this opportunity, please contact your professor.
Here's where you will learn a bit about composting using a three-bin system, along with an overview of the SOW Collective Backyard Farm community. We will touch on seasonal planting techniques, and you'll leave feeling rejuvenated. Community composting is vital for soil health in Los Angeles. Students will learn the process of how LA Compost collects and processes food scraps and how we connect the community to this initiative.
