This experience guides users through historically significant locations, revealing powerful narratives of struggle, triumph, and the ongoing pursuit of justice. Using AR technology, students will create interactive digital content that overlays historical sites with compelling visuals, audio, and animations accessible through mobile devices. This project offers a unique opportunity for students to contribute to an innovative storytelling experience, merging history, technology, and creative expression to engage audiences in new ways. Participants will gain hands-on experience in spatial publishing, digital content creation, and augmented reality development while making an impact on public history and education.
Augmented Reality (AR) Development – Hands-on experience with spatial publishing tools to create immersive AR experiences. Digital Storytelling – How to craft compelling narratives that bring historical events to life using multimedia elements. Historical Research & Interpretation – The ability to analyze and translate historical events into engaging digital content. User Experience (UX) Design – Best practices for designing interactive experiences that enhance public engagement. Collaboration & Project Management – Working with a team to plan, develop, and launch an AR project. Community Engagement – Understanding how technology can be used to educate and inspire audiences about history and social justice. Technical Skills – Exposure to AR platforms, digital media tools, and mobile-based storytelling applications. Students will leave with practical experience in AR content creation, a portfolio-ready project, and a deeper appreciation for history and its connection to the present.
Students will receive comprehensive training in the following areas to equip them with the skills needed to create compelling augmented reality (AR) experiences: Introduction to Augmented Reality (AR) & Spatial Publishing – Overview of AR technology, its applications, and how to use spatial publishing platforms like Hoverlay to create immersive content. Storytelling for AR – Workshops on narrative development, scripting, and structuring historical stories for an interactive, digital audience. Historical Research & Content Development – Guidance on sourcing credible historical information, analyzing primary sources, and transforming research into engaging multimedia experiences. Technical Skills Training – Hands-on tutorials covering AR development tools, media integration (video, images, 3D models, and audio), and user interface considerations. User Experience (UX) & Interaction Design – Best practices for designing AR experiences that are intuitive, engaging, and informative. Collaboration & Project Workflow – Training on working within a team, using project management tools, and coordinating creative and technical aspects.
